Evaluation –The Presence

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product that we produced uses traditional stereotypes that have been used in many films of the same genre. Our media product is based on the effect that Paranormal Activity used as it was filmed by using hand held cameras, but had a common and popular story line from films like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, where it has a villain who usually taunts/stalks their victims. Our film followed the normal conventions of real media products as we had the still pictures in the beginning, and the main character which is the stalker/presence in our media product only targets women, this shows that it is a normal convention because a lot of films of the same genre portray the women as the victim showing classical representation.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our film represents a teen/young adult social group as the main characters fall under this category. Our film traditionally represents females as being vulnerable as the main female in our film is being stalked. The characters in our film are traditionally represented as students as it shows them constantly socialising together and talking on their mobile phone.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

A main stream distribution company as our film has a common genre to it being a slasher/thriller.

Columbia Pictures is an example of a distribution company who may distribute our media product as they have distributed the film I Know What You Did Last Summer which has a very similar genre to our media product.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for our media product would be young adults/teens who enjoy suspense and a touch of eerie feeling.

Our media product starts off by showing characters’ faces’ via close up which helps to build the tension within the film.

How did you attract/address your audience?

We attracted our type of audience with our use of multiple effects including the Ken Burns (pan and scan) effect and colouring effects such as Sepia. Below is an example of the Ken Burns effect.

The Wizard of Oz was originally filmed in sepia for the parts that were shown in black & white, this proves that the Sepia colouring effect has been used in films for many years and continues to be a popular effect.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

From producing our media product I have learned that it is quite simple to make a film. The main hardware needed was a video camera and a computer. We edited our film using imovie which was very helpful as it has a wide range of sounds and effects to use.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I have learnt how to professionally produce and edit movies on a bigger scale. Accurately planning our media product will give us plenty of time to carry out all tasks so if there is anything left to do or anything that can be updated we can carry out the extra tasks effectively to improve our mark.
